Bernard M. "Bernie" McLaughlin, 83, of 165 Leach Ave., Hornell

died July 5, 2008, at his home, following a brief illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born September 6, 1924, and was the son of John & Catherine (Carrig) McLaughlin.

Bernie was a graduate of St. Ann's School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1943). 

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy.  He was employed for over 40 years at New York State Department of Transportation, retiring in 1983 as a soils engineer.

Bernie was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann's Church.  He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a former member of the Hornell American Legion. 

Bernie had a passion for the game of golf and was a member of Twin Hickory Golf Club.  He will be remembered as a compassionate man who had a deep love for his family.  He will also be remembered for his ever-present smile; his wonderful sense of humor and as a man extremely proud of his Irish heritage.   To know Bernie McLaughlin was to love him!  He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.  Bernie made Hornell a better community and a better place to live.

He was married on November 30, 1946 to the former Mary Arvidson who died December 22, 1990.  He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Martin "Tank" McLaughlin and James McLaughlin; 1 sister, Rita Swackhamer; 1 granddaughter, Jordan McLaughlin.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Nancy (Ian) Dare of Loudonville, NY, Debra (Bruce) Steinberger of Palm Bay, FL and Mary Anne (John) Gibbs of Hornell; 5 sons, Thomas "Bernie" (Irene) McLaughlin of Ocala, FL, Michael (Julie) McLaughlin of Geneva, NY, J. Patrick McLaughlin of Hornell, Brian (Kelly) McLaughlin of Geneva and Robert McLaughlin of Hornell; 25 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; many nieces & nephews.

The family of Bernard M. "Bernie" McLaughlin will receive friends on Tuesday (7/8) from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM  &  7:00 PM - 9:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:00  AM at St. Ann's Church with burial in St. Ann's Cemetery.

Bernie's family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made the American Cancer Society, 1316 College Rd., Elmira, NY 14901.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
