State Extends Appliance Rebate Program

Federal stimulus money is being used not for jobs but for sales

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority says its rebate program to get  consumers to buy new energy-efficient appliances is being extended.  It was supposed to end Sunday but there is another $9 million remaining in the rebate fund.  Claims of $7 million had been filed by this past weekend.
Mike Deebs of SEARS HORNELL reports that many people have turned in their old appliances for the more efficient newer models and this seems to be generally the case across the state. "We sold more appliances in just a few days than we ever have before," says Deebs, who added that the state rebates got people out "proving that when the people have the money, they spend it."

Where does the money come from?  Federal stimulus money that was supposed to create jobs is being used by New York to fund the rebate program.
