TAXPAYERS STILL PAYING TEACHERS "TOO DANGEROUS" FOR KIDS
Sex offenders draw down salaries while sitting in the so called "rubber room."
It's called the "rubber room" and it holds many New York City teachers who have been removed from the classroom because of sexual charges brought against them but who, thanks to their union contracts, are still on the payroll.
These teachers report daily to the special room where they read, watch television and play games and together cost the taxpayers millions annually. The one thing they cannot do is have contact with school children because of their past sexual records. It has been said that children are never in more danger from sexual predators than in the public school system. Even some private schools have had their problems with such teachers but the private schools can fire them, unlike the public schools where union contracts prevail.
The New York Post reports that taxpayers are even on the hook for more than $540,000 a year in salaries for six rubber-room teachers who have been legally cleared to return to class -- but will never go back because the schools chancellor believes they're too dangerous.
Overall, the New York City Department of Education has put some in limbo, 550 fully paid teachers crammed into "rubber rooms" as they wait for their misconduct cases to be adjudicated, costing taxpayers $30 million a year.
