Fatal Crash on I-86 in Fremont

An Illinois woman is dead following a two vehicle collision on I-86 late Monday afternoon in the Town of Fremont.
The Steuben County Sheriff's Office reports that Sharon Thompson, 69, was a passenger in a vehicle operated by Raymond Thompson, 79, also of Illinois. They were towing a U-Haul trailer. As he attempted to pass another vehicle, he hit that second vehicle, causing his vehicle to jackknife, overturn, and slide off the roadway.
Sharon Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene. Raymond Thompson was taken to St. James Hospital for a head injury and broken ribs.
The driver of the second vehicle, Deborah Smith, 52, of Arkport, was not injured.
An investigation into the crash is continuing.
