Webster Update: Spengler's Sister Is Believed To Have Died In the Tragedy in Webster

WEBSTER, NY - New York State Police report that they are assisting the Webster Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff's Department in the investigation into the fire and ambush that happened in Webster on Christmas Eve, and here is what trooppers report that they have learned so far:

 

The suspect, William Spengler, 62, shot 4 volunteer firefighters from the West Webster Fire Department at 5:35 AM on December 24. According to State Police, two of the firefighters, Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka, were killed when Spengler opened fire as they arrived at the scene of a vehicle and structure fire.

Two other firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were shot and are currently at Strong Memorial Hospital in the ICU. Spengler was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On December 25, officials located human remains in the home the suspect shared with his sister, Cheryl Spengler. The remains are believed to be those of Cheryl Spengler.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine if the remains are those of Cheryl Spengler.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
