A Nice Perk For New York Lawmakers
Even during a big recession
The State of New York is in serious financial trouble but not the people who run it. The Gannet New Service is reporting that only four states in the union provide free cars to legislators. New York is one of them.
Ranking members of the legislature are provided with cars and they do not have to declare this to the IRS as people in the private sector are required to do. In addition to the free vehicles, these lawmakers still receive $171 per day for lodging and food when they are in Albany for state business.
The leader of the Unshackle New York, Brian Sampson, says this is disgraceful at a time when so many are out of work and struggling to make payments.
