New Unemployment Numbers

Steuben & Allegany Counties both up over 10-percent

There was a slight improvement in the jobless numbers for the state of New York, but things got worse in our immediate area.

According to the state Labor Department, here in Steuben County, the unemployment rate for January was 10.9 percent, up from 10.0 percent in December and 9.7 in January 2009.

In Allegany County, the unemployment rate was also up in January to 10.1 percent, up from 8.7 percent in December. It was 9.4 percent in January 2009.

New York State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 8.9 percent in December to 8.8 percent in January 2010. In January 2009, the state's rate was 7.1 percent.

The U.S. rate decreased from 10.0 percent in December 2009 to 9.7 percent in January 2010. In January 2009, the nation's rate was 7.7 percent.
