Hogan Endorses Cuomo
Steuben County Democrat chairman now supports the Attorney General
Within hours of the announcement that Gov. Paterson would not continue to run for governor, Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan endorsed Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for the Democrat nomination for governor. Hogan is also the Steuben County Democrat chairman. Cuomo is seen as the likely nominee now that Paterson has removed himself from the race. Paterson pointedly refused to endorse Cuomo at his press conference. Meanwhile, some African-American leaders have expressed dismay that Paterson was forced out of the race by stories in New York City newspapers. Rev. Al Sharpton has called a meeting of black leaders to discuss the future of the Democrat party now that Paterson, the first African-American governor, is out of the race. Many black leaders were angry with Cuomo because he opposed H. Carl McCall for the Democrat nomination several years ago. They felt that Cuomo’s opposition to McCall—also an African-American---in the Democrat primary may have hurt his chances in the general election when McCall lost to then Gov. George Pataki.
