STORM UPDATE

We could see 10 inches or more

Our WEATHER CENTER meteorolgists tell us we could see a total of 7 to 11 inches of snow before the current storm is over with the heavy snow beginning late today and continuing overnight.

The Syracuse area is expecting 14 to 16 inches of snow.  Watertown could get up to 24 inches while Binghamton is looking at a possible 18 inches.

Steuben County officials are recommending that if you must go out today for supplies do so before 5:00 p.m.  Travel conditions will deteriorate rapidly this evening.

Should power outages become widespread in nature, it is recommended that you have at least 3 days of supplies including food, bottled water & medicines in case you become stranded at home.  The Office of Emergency Services recommends using flashlights and other battery operated lighting rather than using candles.  Close off areas of your home to maintain heat.  Use blankets and sleeping bags to keep warm, rather than using portable heating devices, which can cause Carbon Monoxide poisoning.  Use caution if you choose to use a generator.  Plug items into the generator directly rather than trying to tie it into the home electric system.  Make sure it is placed outside the home away from air intakes and windows.  Only fuel portable heaters outside the home and after they have been allowed to cool.  Another simple option is to fill your bathtub with water to use if your well pump fails.  Also make sure furnace and ventilation exhaust systems are not hampered by heavy snow.

An additional suggestion is to use caution while shoveling.  This will be a heavy wet snow so it is recommended to shovel smaller amounts more often, rather than waiting till the end of the storm.  Remember to not overexert yourself by taking frequent breaks and drinking plenty of water to remain hydrated.

Also, the Office of Emergency Services is reminding people to dial 911 only in emergency situations.   For Statewide travel conditions call 511.  For local information call our information hotline at 607-664-2194.
