New Rules for Teenage Drivers
Longer waiting time and more pre-licensing driving hours required
A new law goes into effect February 22nd for teenage drivers in New York. Teens may obtain a learner's permit at age 16, but will now have to wait six months before scheduling a road test for a license. The teen will also be required to have 50 hours of driving time verified by a parent or guardian. That's 30 hours more than the old law. And the 50 hours has to include 15 hours of nighttime driving.
Also, drivers with a junior license or junior permit will be allowed to have only one non-family member under 21 as a passenger, unless accompanied by an adult.
