QUEENS DEMOCRAT SENATOR OUSTED FROM THE LEGISLATURE
Was convicted of domestic assault
The State Senate has expelled a senator who was convicted of domestic assault. Hiram Monserrate, a Democrat from Queens, was accused of dragging his girlfriend down the hallway of his apartment building in December, 2008. He was convicted on the misdemeanor charge last fall.
Tuesday's Senate vote to oust Monserrate was 53-8.
The dismissal leaves the state senate make-up as 31 Democrats and 30 Republicans.
Governor Paterson has called for a special election on March 16th to fill the seat.
