Paterson campaign spokesman Richard Fife says that opponents of Gov. Paterson are trying to smear him and force him out of the race for the Democrat nomination for governor.  It is no secret that powerful  Democrats in New York State and elsewhere think Paterson cannot win in November and want him to step aside for Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

According to the Huffington Post, Fife said the following: "The governor started making calls two weeks ago to step up his campaign effort and get ready to officially announce his re-election campaign. The calls were – and are – going well ... And then look what happens – a coordinated effort to stop him and spread rumors."
