HORNELL DOCTOR TALKS ABOUT HIS TIME IN HAITI

Dr. Ismail Mehr back from Haiti but still working to get help to stricken people

In the course of a week, he and his fellow doctors from the Islamic Medical group of North America saw well over 1500 patients in a make-shift hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  Dr. Ismail Mehr says the group of Moslem doctors will leave behind a fully supplied hospital in Haiti.

Meanwhile, the Hornell doctor is directing operations of his medical group in keeping shifts of doctors in that Caribbean country.  Another Hornellian, Mike Green, is now in Haiti working as a coordinator for the doctors if the Islamic medical society of North America.

"Coordinating the plans to keep doctors there is very time consuming," Mehr told us.  He said you don't want five pedestrians at one time, for example, and have to make sure you have all the specialties in place.

He said the work is exhausting, virtually non-stop.

Dr. Mehr tells Kevin Doran that returning to Hornell and the sad news of the death of Lance Cpl. Zach Smith was overwhelming.  He coached the Marine hero in High School and is a friend of the Smith family.

Dr. Mehr will be heard on the NEWSMAKER PROGRAM TODAY at 4:10PM. The program is also available on this website under BROADCASTS.
